Turkey Day Specials and an AwEsOmE Pumpkin Soup Recipe!

Happy Thanksgiving Day!!!  I am hosting my first Thanksgiving in almost 10 years so I hope I don't mess up the Turkey (or my husband's favorite stuffing!)!  So if you guys could send me some good Turkey mojo that would be great!:)

However, I did make an AmAzInG Curried Pumpkin Soup last night - if I do say so myself:)!  No seriously I think it is going to be my new Thanksgiving Eve traditional menu item!  I have posted the recipe at the bottom in case you want to make it - yummmmmmmmmmmm!

I also wanted to post a couple Thanksgiving Day Specials for all you guys who want to start your Black Friday shopping early!  So without further delay - here they are:

Sterling Silver Mother's Pendant - regulary $125 today $100!  I love this with the kids name around it, but a quote or saying looks great too!

Monogrammed Bucket with Bottle Top Opener - regularly $38 today $30!  This is a great gift for a couple!  I use this for all my entertaining - I like to use it as an ice bucket!  It is heat sealed so it doesn't leak and the monogram makes it looks so cute!
Monogrammed Fleece Blanket - regulary $30 today $20!  A great cozy gift for a family! I  have one (of course) with "The Beckers" written in turquoise and I love curling up in front of the TV with it!  AND it looks great draped over the back of my couch.  I think it would be great for a little or teenager girl too!

Merry Christmas Y'all T-shirt - regulary $24.95 today $20!  How cute is this shirt to get you in the Christmas spirit?!?!

We will be open tomorrow with even more Black Friday specials in the store!  I will be working all day and hope to see you guys!

Happy Thanksgiving!

p.s. - Here's the Curried Pumpkin Soup Recipe
1/2 lb fresh mushrooms, sliced
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 tbsps butter
2 tbsps all-purpose flour
1/2 to 1 tsp curry powder
3 cups vegetable broth
1 can (15 oz) solid pack pumpkin
1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
1 tbsp honey
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
Minced chives, optional

In a large saucepan, saute the mushrooms and onion in butter until tender.  Stir in the flour and curry powder until blended.  Gradually add the broth.  Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened.  Add the pumpkin, milk, honey, salt, pepper and nutmeg; heat through.  Garnish with chives if desired.

Yield: 7 servings

The Just In... The Elf on the Shelf!

Some of my favorite memories from childhood are based on family traditions. I think it is because these traditions (especially at Christmas time) were part of the "magic" of the season and always something to look forward to.

For example, on Christmas Eve we would always go to Candlelight Service at Church, drive around to see all the pretty/tacky Christmas lights in town, make lots of hors d'oeuvres for dinner, then settle down to open gifts from other family members. We always did it in that order. Period. It still makes me smile to think about it today :-)

One of my favorite new Holiday Traditions is the Elf on the Shelf:

We carried this in our store last year and we loved hearing stories from both the children and the parents about how they loved the Elf!

The children would come in and tell us what they named the Elf and the parents would tell us how the Elf was keeping Bobbie and Susie in check during the Holiday season since he had a direct line to Santa ;-) I know that both the adults and children will look back fondly on the Elf as one of their favorite traditions.

So of course, we couldn't pass up bringing that much happiness again this year - right?! So the Elf on the Shelf is back in at Swagger so make sure to come in early - he is already flying of the shelves and was almost sold out by Thanksgiving last year!

I though I would share a letter from the author, Carol Aebersold, and how the "Elf on a Shelf" came to be:
    From My Family to Yours,

This charming tradition began for our family when my children were very small. Like most children through the ages, they wanted to know how Santa really knew who was naughty or who was nice. Their answer, as in my own childhood, came in the form of a small pixie-elf.

The first time the elf arrived at our home, my children officially adopted him by giving him a name. Each year he would arrive around the holidays, usually at Thanksgiving. His sole responsibility was to watch the children's behavior and report it to Santa each night. The next morning after the children awoke, they discovered the elf had returned from the North Pole and was now resting in a new and different place. My children would race each other out of bed to try and be the first to spy him in his new position.

Over the years the tradition was perfected and rules were introduced. For example, to better preserve his mystique the children were not allowed to touch him but talking to him was a different matter all together. My children shared many secrets with the elf, and while he was under strict orders not to talk to them, the elf was under no such orders where grown-ups were concerned.

Unwittingly, the tradition provided an added benefit: it helped the children to better control themselves. All it took was a gentle reminder that the "elf is watching," for errant behavior to be modified.

I never dreamed this simple tradition would lead to so many treasured Christmas memories for our entire family. It is my earnest desire that The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition will bring as much joy to your family as it has to mine.

Enjoy this tradition, and MAKE IT YOUR OWN!

With my best wishes for you and those you love,
    Carol

    To many happy traditions!

    The Elf on the Shelf!!

The Elf on the Shelf is one of my favorite Christmas traditions and a great holiday gift to give for families (being the single gal I am, with no minis of my own yet) and a fun tradition to start!
Grab the youngin's (and those young at heart) and take a look at the official The Elf on the Shelf website - it'll make you want to round up all of the Christmas DVDs (and original classic VHS movies) because no magical detail has been spared!

Carol, the crafty mother who created the tradition itself, describes the family favorite as this:"At our home the elf would arrive around the holidays, usually at Thanksgiving. His sole responsibility was to watch my children's behavior and report it to "Santa" each night. The next morning after the children awoke, they discovered the elf had returned from the "North Pole" (with some parental assistance) and was hiding in a different place. My children would race each other out of bed to try and be the first to spy him in his new position.

Over the years the tradition was perfected and rules were even introduced. For example, to better preserve his mystique the children were not allowed to touch him; however, they were allowed to talk to him. For obvious reasons, he was not allowed to reply. Eventually, my children even gave him a name - officially adopting him into the family."
Today's Manic Monday blog special is a great opportunity to bring The Elf on the Shelf home for yourself (we can all use a little reminder to be on our best behavior!), your family, or as a great gift for your favorite neighborhood families or in-laws!

Until 6pm today only, you can stop in Swagger and pick up your very own Elf on the Shelf for 15% off, just by mentioning this blog post!

PS - Can anyone else see this being a fun office tradition? I like the idea of getting everyone networking each morning on a hunt for The Elf on the Shelf!
